In just a few years, Let’s Encrypt has become the world’s largest certification authority in terms of issued certificates. This is due to their efforts in simplifying the process of obtaining certificates across various systems and offering them for free.
Why Is This an Issue?
For devices or systems to accept these certificates, they must “trust” them. This trust is established through root certificates installed on those devices. However, the root certificate used by Let’s Encrypt is set to expire on September 30, 2021.
This means that any connection made from an affected device to a service using Let’s Encrypt certificates will no longer be considered trustworthy, causing the connection to fail.
How Does This Affect Issabel?
For Issabel servers, this issue impacts outgoing connections (when Issabel acts as a client). Any connection made from Issabel to a secure website that relies on Let’s Encrypt will fail with the error: “Issued certificate has expired.”
This does not affect incoming connections. If you are using a Let’s Encrypt certificate for web security, WebRTC, or SIP connections (acting as a server), those connections will continue to work. However, outgoing connections, such as those made via cURL, YUM, or similar tools, will be affected when Issabel functions as a client.
How to Fix the Issue
Fortunately, there is a simple package update that resolves this problem. To apply the fix, access your Issabel server via SSH and run the following command:
That’s it! This update will ensure that your system continues to function correctly after the Let’s Encrypt certificate expiration.
Best regards,
The Issabel Team
